Swimming during the Menopause

Swimming during the Menopause

As we get older and our joints become more brittle, keeping up with the newest Crossfit regime, marathon runners, heavy weight gym sessions can be difficult.

Don’t get me wrong, we are still fabulous as ever, however we mustn’t deny the fact that our activity regime may need a little tweaking!

Ease the pressure but keep the workout 🙂

If you’re looking to change things up, ease pressure on the joints while still getting an extensive workout in, then keep reading!

There is no doubt, swimming has been proven to have numerous health benefits.

Unlike most sports, it’s safe to say, not much can go wrong when taking a dip in a nice refreshing pool! Here are some of the reasons why

  • Swimming, without a doubt, is one of the most joint supportive forms of exercise there is. Being in the water and ‘floating’ eases the weight and impacts our joints face on a daily basis. Especially during high impact exercises such as running! (Check out one of our most recent posts related to exercise during menopause, running vs walking
  • As well as physiological benefits, swimming also has a vast impact on our cardiovascular health. Swimming has been proven to increase lung capacity, regulate blood pressure and improve circulation.
  • Many may think running is the most optimal way to burn fat and rid them calories, however did you know the average person can burn anything between 450 – 700 calories swimming in just an hour? With these figures being purely based on a breast stroke? Who said running was the only way!
  • Last but not least, swimming is a great form of exercise physically as well as mentally. Fortunately most leisure centres have allocated lanes for you to swim in so you can swim unbothered by someone or someone attempting to steal the equipment you are currently using to finish their set! You are left to your lane to blissfully swim along in peace. Giving you plenty of time to nurture your mind as well as your body

Find something you love

So there it is, four valuable reasons for you to throw on that swimsuit, flaunt your gorgeous self and take a nice cool dip! It’s important to find a form of activity you enjoy and can obtain a consistent regime with. Exercise should be enjoyable (at least to some extent). The key to sticking to it is finding something you love to do! Consistency is key, which is impossible if you don’t love what you do!

Find something you love doing and look forward to! Whether that is swimming or something else, keep it up! And remember, you are beautiful no matter what shape or size because you are you and no one can take that away from you!
